Main Characters

Twilight Sparkle

Voiced by: Tara Strong
Singing Voice: Rebecca Shoichet

Twilight Sparkle is a unicorn pony with a lavender body and a dark purple mane and tail with pink and purple streaks running through it. She is the primary protagonist of the series, appearing in almost every episode and based mostly on the unicorn pony named Twilight from Rescue at Midnight Castle in the original 1980s series and the G3 earth pony named Twilight Twinkle. Extremely gifted with magic, she is Princess Celestia's protégée, once considered knowledge more important than friendship. When the danger of the Mare in the Moon loomed, Princess Celestia sent her to Ponyville to learn the importance of friendship, which proved invaluable in her confrontation with Nightmare Moon. She decides to stay in Ponyville and study friendship with her mentor's blessings. Twilight studies extensively and takes an organized, analytical approach to solving problems. She also sometimes appears to have an insecure side in some of the episodes when it comes to fitting in.[1] Unlike other unicorn ponies, Twilight can perform a wide variety of magic, including teleportation on occasions. Her spirit represents the element of magic.

Applejack

Voiced by: Ashleigh Ball

Applejack is an earth pony with an orange body and blonde mane and tail. Originally, she was featured in the 1984 TV special Rescue from Midnight Castle and has almost the same appearance she had in the original episode, but with fewer apples on her cutie mark.[2] Applejack is very dependable and down-to-earth, but also stubborn and a bit selfish. She wears a brown cowboy hat and is the only one of the six main characters who keeps her mane and tail tied back, instead of letting them fall loose. Applejack comes from a large family of ponies with apple-related names, spread all over Equestria, who oversee apple orchards and run a group of businesses to sell apples and products made from them.[1] Applejack has demonstrated her strength and dexterity on many occasions, and she is also very skilled with a lasso. She represents the spirit of honesty.

Rainbow Dash

Voiced by: Ashleigh Ball

Rainbow Dash is a pegasus pony with a sky-blue body and a rainbow-striped mane and tail, highly similar to G3 Rainbow Dash (an earth pony), but with a very different nature similar to Firefly, an adventurous pink pegasus pony from "Rescue from Midnight Castle (1984)" (along with Applejack).[3] She works with the other pegasus ponies to move clouds around the sky and adjust the weather in Equestria. She is very brave and bold,[1] but also mischievous and proud, as well as sometimes being insensitive. She has great speed and works with the other pegasus ponies to move clouds around the sky and adjust the weather. Her lifelong dream is to join the Wonderbolts, Equestria's aerobatic flight team. Rainbow Dash's signature move is the Sonic Rainboom, in which she flies fast enough to break the sound barrier, creating a sonic boom and a rainbow-hued shock wave at the same time. It is revealed that when she did this move for the first time, she earned her cutie mark and set in motion a chain of events that allowed the other five main characters to earn theirs as well. By Lesson Zero, she has perfected a destructive variation of this. She represents the element of loyalty.

Pinkie Pie

Voiced by: Andrea Libman
Singing Voice: Shannon Chan-Kent

Pinkie Pie is an earth pony with a pink body and magenta mane and tail. She is one of the eight original 2003 Ponies (called G3) and one of the Core Seven friends as leader in the G3.5 incarnation of the toyline. She maintains most of her appearance, but with her mane and tail color (usually, her body used to be pink, and her mane & tail a lighter shade) and cutie mark (originally 3 balloons with curved strings) changed slightly; her new cutie mark matches Surprise's, a pegasus pony from the 1980s series, but the balloons are colored blue and yellow instead of purple. Born as Pinkamena Diane Pie, Pinkie Pie is a baker/confectioner at the Sugarcube Corner and a party planner, but is very funny, talkative, a bit air-headed, and quite random at times. She also enjoys singing and playing pranks, sometimes with Rainbow Dash's help, but will not play any on Fluttershy due to her sensitive nature. In the episode called "Swarm of the Century", she makes a musician out of herself regardless of some other ponies' concerns about the Parasprites. Her behavior is frequently random and chaotic at times and she has been known to break the fourth wall. There is seldom a day without Pinkie's smile.[1] She possesses the "Pinkie sense," an ability to predict events in the immediate future through twitches of various body parts. When she becomes sad enough, her mane and tail go from curly to completely straight and her pink coloration loses its brightness, matching her appearance during her unhappy youth on a rock farm before she earned her cutie mark. While she usually hops around, Pinkie is exceptionally quick when running, able to keep pace with and chase down a hurrying, airborne Rainbow Dash. She represents the element of laughter.

Fluttershy

Voiced by: Andrea Libman

Fluttershy is a pegasus pony with a yellow body and a pink mane and tail. She has a similar appearance and nature to Posey, an earth pony from the 1980's show,[4] and Sky Skimmer, a Generation 2 Pony. Her cutie mark is three pink butterflies, and she is named after an earth pony in the G3 line. She is sweet and calm, but is timid and often very shy around others, though she can become forceful and assertive when pushed too far. Fluttershy has a great love and care for animals and is willing to help them at any cost.[1]Although she is a pegasus, she prefers to stay close to the ground, living in a cottage near the forest instead of the sky city of Cloudsdale with the other pegasi. She possesses a special ability known as "The Stare," which allows her to intimidate even the fiercest animals. In 'Suited for Success', Fluttershy was shown to have good knowledge of sewing and fashion just like Rarity. According to the Cutie Mark Chronicles, she has been saved by a group of colorful butterflies allowing her to fly for the first time. Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom scares the animals Fluttershy has befriended and causes her to earn her cutie mark. She represents the element of kindness.

Rarity

Voiced by: Tabitha St. Germain
Singing Voice: Kazumi Evans

Rarity is a unicorn pony with a white body and a royal purple mane and tail. She has the appearance of Glory, the unicorn who made a short appearance in Rescue from Midnight Castle and is named after her prior namesake character from The Runaway Rainbow. Her cutie mark matches that of Sparkler, a unicorn pony that made her appearance in Escape from Catrina, but with fewer diamonds. She is a fashion designer/seamstress at her own dressmaking shop, the Carousel Boutique. She is very stylish and beautiful, takes great interest in fashion and clothing design, and often tries to make herself the center of attention. She considers herself a lady and often acts sophisticated. She can also be very dramatic, often when a disaster occurs to her.[1] She is Sweetie Belle's older sister and dreams of becoming a designer for Princess Celestia. She also once hoped to marry Celestia's nephew Prince Blueblood, until he she actually met him, where he turned out to be snobbish, rude, and self-centered. Rarity's magic has been demonstrated to involve both telekinesis and finding nearby jewels buried underground. She represents the element of generosity.

Spike

Voiced by: Cathy Weseluck

Spike is a purple and green dragon who is Twilight Sparkle's assistant and roommate. He is much closer in appearance to his original design from the Rescue from Midnight Castle TV special and the My Little Pony series of the 1980s than to the redesign in the direct-to-video episodes of the 2000s. Spike also handles communications between Twilight and Princess Celestia, burning Twilight's written messages with his fiery breath to send them and then coughing up the scrolls Celestia sends back. He frequently displays a sardonic personality and laughs at others' misfortunes, but can be counted on to help Twilight and her friends when they need him. In some of the episodes, it is shown that Spike has a major crush on Rarity, but she is unaware of this until season 2. Episode 23 reveals that Twilight hatched Spike from an egg as part of an admission exam for a school of magic run by Celestia, gaining both her cutie mark and a chance to study under Celestia's direct guidance.

Secondary Characters

Princess Celestia

Voiced by: Nicole Oliver

A winged unicorn hybrid (called an Alicorn by the fandom) who is the ruler of Equestria and the elder sister of Princess Luna. She created Equestria with her sister Luna and controls the sun. She is a pegasus unicorn pony with a very pale lavender body and multi-colored pastel mane and tail. She wears a gold tiara, collar and horse shoes. She, alongside Princess Luna were based on the Generation 1 Princess Ponies from the 1980's animated series. One thousand years before the start of the series, she sealed Nightmare Moon in the moon with The Elements of Harmony. She is Twilight Sparkle's teacher and gave her the task to "make friends" in Ponyville upon learning of Nightmare Moon's return. However, after her sister is restored to her true form, she forgives her and allows Twilight Sparkle to remain in Ponyville with a new task of "studying the magic of friendship". She almost always refers to Twilight Sparkle as "My Faithful Student". She is usually very kind, patient, and understanding, and wishes for her subjects to relax and be themselves around her. However, on two occasions, she has shown herself to be more intimidating or impatient, although in one instance, she seemed to simply be playing stern to teach Twilight and her friends a lesson. She is shown to have a fondness for playing light-hearted jokes, and has a pet phoenix with a similar sense of humor. Her name is based on the word "Celestial", which is based on the Latin word "caelum" meaning "sky" or "heaven".

Apple Bloom

Voiced by: Michelle Creber

Applejack's younger sister; a yellow earth pony with a red mane/tail and a large pink bow on her head. Her color is originally both based on Sun Shimmer, a Generation 3 Earth Pony and Sunburst, a Generation 1 Mountain Boy Pony. The only notable difference is both her hair color and her eye color. Her worry over being one of the last ponies in her class without a cutie mark makes her feel like an outsider until she meets two other "Blank Flanks" and befriends them. She has a thick Southern accent like Applejack, but it tends to fade when she talks to someone she does not like or wants to prove herself to. Together with Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, she forms the Cutie Mark Crusaders so they can find their place in the world. Apple Bloom studies martial arts and is skilled at design and carpentry, as shown by the speed with which she renovates Applejack's old treehouse for the Crusaders' use. Despite these talents, she preferred performing her own (disastrous) choreography when performing with Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle in a talent show.

Scootaloo

Voiced by: Madeleine Peters

An orange Pegasus pony with a magenta mane and tail. She is originally based on her Generation 3 counterpart except with a different mane and tail color, added wings, and the lack of a cutie mark. The tomboy of the group, Scootaloo is bold and impulsive, not afraid to speak her mind and argue or fight if necessary. Although she has not yet learned to fly, she can use her tiny wings to give her extra propulsion when riding a scooter, allowing her to perform amazing stunts or pull the other two Crusaders around Ponyville in a toy wagon. She has a talent for activities that require agility, such as stunt driving, dancing, and choreography. However, she ignores these talents, favoring singing (off-tune) over them. She idolizes Rainbow Dash.

Sweetie Belle

Voiced by: Claire Corlett
Singing Voice: Michelle Creber

Rarity's younger sister; a white unicorn pony with a pink and purple mane and tail. She is originally based on her Generation 3 counterpart except with a different mane and tail color and the lack of a cutie mark. Sweetie Belle tends to be a slower thinker than Apple Bloom and Scootaloo, but is as excitable as they are and will readily follow their lead. Though she wants to be a designer like Rarity, her inexperience and clumsiness prove to be a hindrance when she tries to assist in the shop, and when she designs set pieces for a talent show. She has a talent for singing and songwriting, turning one of Fluttershy's lullabies into a rousing gospel number, but prefers not to sing in public. In addition, she has not yet demonstrated any magical ability with her horn.

Other Characters

Big Macintosh

Voiced by: Peter New

Big Macintosh is the older brother of Applejack and Apple Bloom and a member of the Apple Pony Family, always seen wearing a hitching collar and chewing on a stalk of wheat. He has a rather calm and easy-going demeanor to contrast with his sister Applejack's more stubborn attitude. His appearance matches his demeanor: his eyes are generally half closed and he looks slightly bored, as though he's simply accepting what's happening around him. He resembles a Clydesdale horse, as do most of the male ponies, but is considerably larger than the others.

Granny Smith

Voiced by: Tabitha St. Germain

Granny Smith is the oldest member of the Apple family living in Ponyville. She is the elderly grandmother of Applejack, Big Macintosh, Apple Bloom and Braeburn. Due to her age, she always seems a bit disoriented and sometimes uses a walker to get around; Applejack mentions that she has a bad hip.

Mr. Carrot Cake and Mrs. Cup Cake

(Mrs. Cake voiced by Tabitha St. Germain)

Mr. Carrot Cake and Mrs. Cup Cake are the owners of Sugarcube Corner and Pinkie Pie's employers and landlords, as they rent the loft above the shop to her. The couple frequently perform catering services in Ponyville, specializing in sweets and baked goods. They are shown preparing many cakes and sweets for Celestia's visit in Swarm of the Century, and wait on the Princess at the party thrown for her in A Bird in the Hoof.

Pinkie Pie works for them in their shop, and the Cakes show a good amount of patience for the party-loving pony, especially when she eats the merchandise or uses their shop floor as a party location. Faust has stated that they love her as a daughter. Mrs. Cup Cake has a particularly motherly affection, referring to others and even the Princess herself, albeit not deliberately, as "dearie."

Cheerilee

Voiced by: Nicole Oliver

A teacher in the Ponyville schoolhouse who cares about each of her pony students, and loves to help them learn and grow. She seems to take a special interest in the Cutie Mark Crusaders, focusing on discovering their true talents.

Diamond Tiara

Voiced by: Chantal Strand

Diamond Tiara is a school-age pony and a classmate of Apple Bloom. She, like Silver Spoon, is a bully who calls ponies without cutie marks "blank flanks", and deems them as inferior. She has a snooty and stuck up personality and enjoys belittling others.

Silver Spoon

Voiced by: Shannon Chan-Kent

Silver Spoon is a school-aged pony who first appears in Call of the Cutie. She and Diamond Tiara are classmates of Apple Bloom. Silver Spoon shares the same trait as Diamond Tiara as being snooty, stuck up and mean. However, she seems to be the follower, with Diamond Tiara being the leader. They share a special hoofshake and Silver Spoon appears to show some geniune concern towards her feelings.

Snails

Voiced by: Richard Ian Cox

Snails is a young unicorn pony often seen in the company of his friend Snips and is shown to be slow in nature and mind. He admires the bragging magician Trixie along with Snips. The only magic he's done in the series is letting his horn illuminate noticeably in the dark. He used it as such in the Ursa's cave.

Snips

Voiced by: Lee Tockar

Snips is an excitable and goofy unicorn pony, who jumps eagerly at the slightest inclination. He is unusually short and round, and may be one of the smallest in Ponyville. He is characterized by small black eyes, bucked teeth, dark eyebrows, and a high and scratchy voice. These features grant him a unique appearance relative to the other residents of Ponyville. In Boast Busters, his first appearance, he displayed an infatuation with Trixie, a braggart magician.

Braeburn

Voiced by: Andrew Francis

Braeburn is an earth pony from Appleloosa, and is Applejack, Big McIntosh and Apple Bloom's cousin. He thinks highly of the area, insisting on showing the group around even as they try to tell him about a buffalo stampede that disrupted their journey here.

Zecora

Voiced by: Brenda Crichlow

A zebra who wears gold hoops in her ears and around her right or left foreleg (the animation is inconsistent) and neck, who lives in the middle of the Everfree Forest, in a hut with natural herbs, a cauldron, and various masks from her homeland. The ponies in Ponyville had never seen a unique creature as her, and so they would lock up their doors whenever she comes to visit. But Twilight and her friends help to integrate her into the town's society. Although she was first thought to be an evil enchantress who could inflict curses, she is revealed to be very friendly and an expert herbalist. Therefore, in Luna Eclipsed, the mayor refers to her as "our friend Zecora". She is known for always talking in rhyme and speaks with an African accent.

Princess Luna

Voiced by: Tabitha St. Germain

The younger sister of Celestia, Luna is a winged unicorn pony with an indigo body and a teal mane and tail. She, alongside Princess Celestia were based on the Generation 1 Princess Ponies from the 1980's animated series. She was the main antagonist in the first two episodes (in season one) of the series. Originally she raised and lowered the moon each night, but she became jealous of Celestia because the ponies slept through the night and thus could not appreciate her work. This jealousy eventually transformed Luna into the shadowy Nightmare Moon (see below).

Luna returns to Ponyville during Nightmare Night, Equestria's version of Halloween, with a taller and more slender build, a darker coat, and a translucent mane and tail. With Twilight's help, she tries to change her public image from that of the terrifying Nightmare Moon (on which the holiday is based) to a more favorable one as Princess. Her first attempts end disastrously, prompting her to decree Nightmare Night canceled, but Twilight persuades her to give Ponyville another chance. When Luna discovers that the residents enjoy being scared as part of the night's festivities, she uses the Nightmare Moon persona to help them have fun and thus gains their trust and friendship.

Her name means "moon" in Latin. The Friendship is Magic book, which comes with one of the gift sets of the toys, references her as Selena, which is a dialect variant of the Greek "selene", meaning "moon".

The Mayor

Voiced by: Cathy Weseluck

The Mayor of Ponyville is a tan earth pony with a gray mane and appears briefly in the series. As the pony in charge of the Ponyville community, her main task is overseeing the town, especially during important events. While a serene individual, she tends to become stressed when something goes wrong, particularly when the community fails to get along or when certain major tasks are not finished on time. It is unknown if she has an actual name.

Sapphire Shores

Voiced by: Rena Anakwe

Sapphire Shores is a famous popstar in Canterlot. She speaks with a loud and theatrical voice, frequently inserts musical intonations into her sentences. Despite her fame and over-the-top mannerisms, she seems to be quite friendly and approachable toward Rarity: she visits Rarity's shop personally and asks to be called by her first name.

Photo Finish

Voiced by: Tabitha St. Germain

Photo Finish is a famous fashion photographer in Equestria hailing from Canterlot. With her pseudo-German accent, Photo Finish joins the ranks of unplacable foreign-accent ponies. She is quite posh, stuck up, and dismissive of ponies she deems unworthy of her time. She travels with an entourage of servile ponies who never speak and who cater to her every whim, doing things like carrying her around and vanishing the moment she tells them to leave. She is a shameless self-promoter, always referring to herself as "I, Photo Finish." She is never seen without her sunglasses on and her eye color is unknown. She is a reference to Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of the fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue.

Hoity-Toity

Voiced by: Peter New

Hoity-Toity is a major representative of the fashion world from Canterlot, and arrived in Ponyville to see Rarity's fashion show. Having seen her "perfect" dresses, he then gave her a brutally honest review, saying how terrible they were. This almost ended the unicorn's career, until her friends brought him back to give Rarity another chance. He was impressed by the first set of her dresses, which she had set aside when her friends seemed dissatisfied with them, and decided to feature them at his boutique in Canterlot. He bears visual similarity to fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who carries a paper fan.

Twist

Voiced by: Unknown

Twist is one of Apple Bloom's supportive friends, and also her classmate in school. She is described to have a nerdy personality but is very generous and supportive. She also shows several stereotypically nerdy traits, such as a curly red mane and tail, pale coat, large, large glasses, and a nasal speech impediment (she has a hard time pronouncing W's and S's). Twist has a good ability on making all kinds of candies.

Soarin'

Voiced by: Matt Hill

Soarin' is a member of the Wonderbolts, Equestria's aerial flight team. He first appeared during the early episodes of the series and then in Sonic Rainboom during the Best Young Flyer Competition. He appears again during the Grand Galloping Gala alongside Spitfire, recognizes Rainbow Dash again during the event, and is Applejack's only customer that night, buying an apple pie from her. He is named after Amy Keating Rogers's son, Soren mixed with the word soaring.

Spitfire

Voiced by: Maryke Hendrikse

Spitfire is the leader of the Wonderbolts, Equestria's aerial flight team. She acknowledged Rainbow Dash during the Best Young Flyer Competition for saving her and two other members after Rarity knocked them out. She appears again during the Grand Galloping Gala alongside Soarin' and recognizes Rainbow Dash again during the event. She is named after the Supermarine Spitfire.

Fancy Pants

Voiced by: Trevor Devall

Fancy Pants is a sociable Unicorn pony of high social status. First appearing in the episode "Sweet and Elite", He is kind to Rarity, and shows admiration towards the dress she made for Twilight, even if it was unfinished and "simple" compared to most other Canterlot dress, which contrasts with other residents of Canterlot, who are distasteful of "country" or "rustic" fashion. He also shows an eagerness to meet Rarity's friends.

Prince Blueblood

Voiced by: Trevor Devall

Prince Blueblood is a unicorn pony and Rarity's love affection. Rarity explained in her dream that they swiftly fall in love and marry. Prince Blueblood appears outwardly the same in The Best Night Ever, where Rarity expects him to court her as he did in her dream, but he is too self-centered. Rarity expects Prince Blueblood to give her a rose, but he takes it for himself; he brings a cushion only for himself to sit in the castle's yard, leaving Rarity without a comfortable seat; she expects Blueblood to throw his coat over a puddle so her shoes won't get dirty, but he coerces to throw her shawl; he expects her to pay for his dining; and he generally ignores her wants, and patronizes "common ponies". He even goes as far as using Rarity as a pony shield from getting cake all over his clothes. Prince Blueblood's title was initially supposed to be 'Duke', and that he's the "great great great great great great great great great great great (and probably even more greats) nephew on Celestia's and Luna's mother's side, about 52 times removed, roughly speaking." Later, Amy Keating Rogers confirmed that Prince Blueblood is not Celestia's nephew.

Pipsqueak

Voiced by: William Lawrenson

Pipsqueak is a young earth pony foal who recently moved to Ponyville from Trottingham. He first appeared trick-or-treating with a group of fillies, at Twilight's Library, wearing a pirate costume, and he replies with it being his first ever. When talking to Twilight, he uses a British accent, but drops it later in the episode. He joins a group of fillies chaperoned by Pinkie Pie, which follows Zecora while she tells the story of Night Mare Moon. When Princess Luna appears, he gets scared and dumps his candy in front of Night Mare Moon's statue along with the rest of the group and they all run off. The other time he is shown is when Princess Luna saves him when he falls into Applejack's water apple barrel. He is startled when Pinkie Pie said she'll eat him and eventually runs off again. Later, he witnesses Princess Luna trying to scare the ponies and says that she is his favorite princess. As his name suggests, Pipsqueak is smaller than the other ponies. His coat has patches of color on it, unlike most ponies in the show who have a solid-color coat. A light coat with dark patches is characteristic of pinto horses.

Pets

Angel

Fluttershy's pet rabbit. Angel can be seen as a cunning and mischievous bunny despite his cute and seemingly innocent name. He has a strong influence over Fluttershy's decisions in the series, as he is far more assertive than the timid pegasus. However, he does seem to genuinely care for Fluttershy, as several of his actions toward her are usually just a little push to get her to do something he knows she wants. Angel does not seem to be nice to anyone unless Fluttershy is with him.

Winona

Applejack's pet Border Collie. She is first seen with Applejack, where they round up a stampeding herd of cattle (and later does the same with a large number of baby rabbits).

Opalescence

Rarity's pet Persian Cat. Opalescence is a white cat with a purple bow on top of her head. She wears a purple collar studded with opals. Although Rarity has expressed that Opal often swipes at her when she attempts to groom her, Rarity seems to have a deep caring for her cat - instantly forgetting her woes when she saw Opal apparently stuck in a tree. Opal also seems to have a sarcastic sense of humor, chopping off some of Sweetie Belle's hair and offering a smug look afterwards when Sweetie Belle suggested she might be good with animals. She shares her owner's tastes in fashion and begrudgingly assists her with her work. Most of the time, however, she prefers to sleep on the various fabrics about the studio.

Gummy

Pinkie Pie's pet alligator. Gummy appears to be usually calm, showing little interest to whatever happens around him. However, he also has a tendency to try biting various things and to hide in the water. When he's first introduced in Feeling Pinkie Keen, he shows rather aggressive behavior for a pet, because after Pinkie sets him on the floor, he proceeds to try to bite the pink Earth Pony repeatedly; as he has no teeth, this does no damage and Pinkie doesn't even seem to notice. The episode Party of One shows that his behavior is usually more peaceful, although he still tends to bite whatever happens to be near him. Most of the time, Gummy is docile to the point of absurdity, and in direct contrast with Pinkie Pie's crazed antics; he shows little to no awareness of his surroundings, often just sitting and staring into space with the same unchanging expression on his face at all times. No matter what is happening, Gummy usually just sits in place and stares at nothing, although he will occasionally attempt to bite nearby objects or even ponies. He's also able to "dance" to the music with his tail to be the only part of his body actually moving. He also seems to favor a ball of wool as his favorite toy, happily pushing it along with his nose or riding it as it rolls along. Pinkie seems convinced that Gummy is much more complex and lively than he appears to be. At the end of Party of One, for example, she said that Gummy was "pretty upset" about his party being unattended, despite the fact that Gummy had shown no change in his behavior or mood whatsoever.

Philameena

Princess Celestia's pet phoenix, Philameena has reached a burning day when Fluttershy saw her and, not knowing she was a phoenix, assumes she is ill and takes her, without the princess' knowledge, to her cottage for treatment. Philameena, a prankster, strings her along and leads her on a merry chase before bursting into flame and rejuvenating.

Owlowiscious

Twilight Sparkle's pet Horned Owl. Although incapable of speech, Owlowiscious is highly intelligent. Also shows to be brave and willing to help the others. Not much is known of his personality at the time, as he seems to be collected and inexpressive.

Tank

Rainbow Dash's pet tortoise, first seen persistently wanting Rainbow Dash to choose him as her new pet, but Rainbow Dash refuses, seeing him as a useless, slow pet that will keep her grounded. When Rainbow Dash's wing is caught under a rock, Tank comes to her rescue and shows loyalty by lifting the rock and rescuing her in the process. She chooses him as her new pet when the other animals leave her behind, caught up in the frenzy of winning the race, and outfits him with a helicopter propeller so he can keep up with her in the air.

Antagonists

Night Mare Moon

Voiced by: Tabitha St. Germain
Night Mare Moon is the corrupted form of Princess Luna, who, after becoming jealous of her older sister because the ponies slept during the night and did not appreciate it, eventually transformed Luna into the shadowy Night Mare Moon. In her new form, her body is black in blue armor with her mane and tail appearing to be made entirely out of sparkly indigo, purple-rimmed moon dust that she can use as limbs. Celestia was forced to seal her in the moon after she attempted to bring eternal night to the world. During the pilot episode, she breaks free after a thousand years and returns to Equestria on the longest day of the year, intent on carrying out her plan again. She uses her powers to hinder Twilight Sparkle and the other ponies in their search for the Elements of Harmony. Eventually, she is returned to her original form with the Elements and resumes her place at Celestia's side.

Discord

Voiced by: John De Lancie
Discord is the primary antagonist of Season 2's first two episodes "Return of Harmony", an ancient spirit of chaos who is referred by one of the characters as a "Draconequus,"[5] and has the appearance of a chimera. As far as can be discerned, he has the body and left foreleg of a griffin, a lion's right foreleg and paw, the head and neck of a pony with an oversized tooth and goat beard, a mismatched pair of antlers (deer and goat), asymmetrically-sized eyes, a pair of wings (one bat, one Pegasus), the left hind leg of a goat, the right hind leg of a green lizard, and the tail of a red dragon. His personality is likewise chaotic as his body, desiring nothing more than to cause chaos for his own amusement. His outward playful and teasing attitude hides a far more malicious and sadistic aspect of his personality, manipulating the emotions and thoughts of others. His influence is reflected as the victims progressively lose their colors as the corruption persists.
According to Princess Celestia, prior to her and Luna's arrival, Discord ruled the Equestria over a millenia ago and used his powers to make unicorns', pegasi', and earth ponies' lives miserable. However, Celestia and Luna used the Elements of Harmony to seal Discord within stone, leaving him as a statue that was put on display in the gardens around the royal palace. However, due to Celestia and Luna forfeiting their control over the Elements of Harmony, which resulted from Luna's transformation into Nightmare Moon, the spell binding Discord began to weaken over time until the inharmonious aura caused by the quarrels of the Cutie Mark Crusaders gave him enough strength to break free of his prison. Soon after, Discord managed to steal the Elements of Harmony from a special vault in the royal palace, challenging the current Bearers of the Elements to find them by solving the riddle which would reveal their location.
When Twilight Sparkle determines the answer to be at the hedge maze in the castle garden, Discord sets up a game with the ponies. He robs the Bearers of their flight and magical capabilities by removing Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy's wings, and Twilight Sparkle's and Rarity's horns, citing the first rule of his "game" as prohibiting their use. The second rule of his game is that all of the Bearers must participate, or else the game is over with him as the victor by default.[6] The ponies proceed into the maze, only to be split up from each other at the start and independently confronted by Discord, who twists their thoughts by exploiting their personal insecurities, as well as using hypnosis, in order to coerce them into abandoning the qualities that make them Bearers of the Elements. As a result, Applejack becomes a compulsive liar via an illusion of the truth being painful, Pinkie Pie a grouch after being tricked into thinking that she is laughed at, Rarity becoming greedy with a boulder posing as a giant diamond, and Fluttershy becoming cruel and insensitive despite her acceptance of her faults ruining Discord's fun.
Discord then has Rainbow Dash abandon her loyalty to her friends and to Equestria when she accepts Discord's dubious offer to take back her wings and leave the maze, after being tricked into believing her home city of Cloudsdale is collapsing without her intervention, allowing Discord to win. Though Discord reveals the Elements of Harmony were never in the maze and hints Twilight to their actual location, his actual scheme was to shatter the Bearers' friendship with each other, thus rendering the Elements of Harmony useless. As the party disbands, Twilight herself succumbs to Discord's mind corruption and tearfully returns to her library in order to pack her things and leave Ponyville. However, the timely intervention by Princess Celestia sending back all of her letters enables Twilight Sparkle to regain herself as she manages to restore her friends to normal. By the time Discord realized this fact during the second confrontation, he ends up being turned back to stone after being hit by the Elements' power.

Trixie

Voiced by: Kathleen Barr

Trixie (who refers to herself in third person as "The Great and Powerful Trixie") is a unicorn pony and a traveling magician. She visits Ponyville with her show, in which she greatly exaggerates her magical abilities through the use of fireworks and stage effects, and claims to have defeated an Ursa Major. Shortly thereafter, Trixie is unable to defeat an Ursa Minor, the infant offspring of the Ursa Major, when it attacks Ponyville after being startled out of its nap. After Twilight calms it down, Trixie admits her deception and flees from Ponyville.

Voiced by: Maryke Hendrikse

Gilda is a grumpy female griffin and an old friend of Rainbow Dash from their days on the Junior Speedsters flight team, who cares most about being cool, and deems Rainbow Dash as cool because they are old friends. Though she seems quite friendly when Rainbow Dash is around, she reveals her true personality when they are apart - bullying, mean, and rude. At a party, Gilda inadvertently falls victim to several pranks set up by Rainbow Dash and loses her composure, prompting Rainbow Dash to break off their friendship.

Diamond Dogs

Voiced by: Scott McNeil (Rover), Garry Chalk (Fido), Unknown (Spot)

The Diamond Dogs are a gang of greedy jewel-finding dogs who want the jewels for themselves. They kidnapped Rarity and force her to find gems for them after they see her using magic to find gems. They tell Rarity they hunt for gems, and take her into their extensive system of underground mines, where some of them serve as guards and attack dogs while others find gems. But in the end, Rarity had them had even until her friends arrived to rescue her with spoils. The three main Diamond Dogs (Rover, Fido, and Spot) wear jackets and diamond-studded collars, while the guards wear armor and carry lances. They alternate between walking on their hind legs and all fours, their elongated forelegs giving them a gorilla-like appearance.
